As a coach, I appreciate that people may come to me from one end of the spectrum or the other – with a blank canvas or with something they’ve been working on and would like a different perspective.
This concept reminds me of taking direction from the artist, at a “paint and sip” event. Despite the instructions, everyone’s canvas will ultimately look different because we are all unique.
How we mix our colors are different, how we “dab” or “swoop” or “drag” is different. Where we focus our efforts are different – do we worry about the background or do we put enough there to get things started? When the canvas is done, how do we feel about it. Maybe there’s a mixture of “hm, that wasn’t bad” or “wow, that was more fun than I thought” or “geez, why is making clouds so difficult?” In any event, it’s probably a mixture. Even those of us that have painted exceptionally well must determine when continuing to belabor on the same point becomes counterproductive.
So for me, life is our canvas. Our situations, opportunities, joys, pains, victories, and failures are the colors. Our realization that we can control our responses, plans, and perspective is the paint brush.
We choose the size of the brush based on the task; we choose the pressure we apply based on the intended outcome – the difference between drawing the base of a tree trunk, or a tree branch.
